no more than/ not more than/ no more ~ than のシンプルな覚え方

 高校の比較級でややこしくて覚えるのを諦めてしまいたくなるのが、この3つ。

「テストに出てもどうせ数点落とすだけだから、ほっておこう！」と考えがちですが、

難関大学などではこの表現に絡んだ、穴埋め、並べ替え、和訳などの問題をよく目にします。

ほっておいてはいけません！

 まず、以下の3パターンは頭に入れてしまいましょう。

• not more than 数詞 / not less than 数詞
• no more than 数詞 / no less than 数詞
• no more A than B / no less A than B 

 

1. no more than 数詞  と  not more than 数詞 の違いは「not」か「no」です。

「not」の方の意味は「t」つながりで、

not more than = at most  =「多くとも」と覚えてしまいましょう。

 

not less than も同じです。　

not less than = at least =「少なくとも」になります。

 

意味は覚えたけど、not more than の意味だっか、no more thanの意味だったか、

分からなくなることってありますよね。

そんな時のために、「t」つながりで暗記してしまいましょう♪

 

例文

• There were not more than twenty people in the theatre.　
• その劇場には多くとも20人しか人がいなかった。 

• The cost will be not less than 20,000 yen. 
• その費用は、少なくとも2万円になるでしょう。

 

2. no more than 数詞 / no less than 数詞 

no more = 多くない =  少ない = ネガティブ と考えます。

なので意味は「～しか」とネガティブな感じになります。 

• He paid me no more than 3,000 yen for the work.　
• 彼はその仕事に対して、私に3000円しか払ってくれなかった。

一方、no less = 少なくない = 多い = ポジティブと考えます。

なので意味は「～も」「～ほども多く」とポジティブな感じになります。 

• She paid me no less than 30,000 yen for the work.　
• 彼女はその仕事に対して、私に3万円も払ってくれた。 

 

3. no more A than B / no less A than B 

先ほど説明した、no more = ネガティブ を思い出してください。

これをさらに「ネガティブ= 否定」と考えてしまいます。

 

 

than は「 ～と同様に」と訳します。

 

通常この表現は「A is no more B than C (is) 」 のように使われます。

「no more = 否定」 そして、「than=～と同様に」という意味にすると

以下のように考えることができます。

 

「A is no more B than C (is)」

➡ 「A is not B 、Cと同様に」

➡「AはCと同様にBでない。」

 

A whale is no more a fish than a horse (is).

➡ (クジラは魚ではない　馬と同様に)

➡ クジラは馬と同様に魚ではない。

  

He is no more handsome than I (am)

 ➡ (彼はハンサムではない　私と同様に)

➡  彼は私と同様にハンサムではない。

 

次に「less」のパターンである「A is no less B than C (is)  」です。

no less = ポジティブと先ほど考えたものを「ポジティブ= 肯定」と考えてしまいます。

than は「～と 同様に」と訳します。

 

通常この表現は 「A is no less B than C (is)  」のように使われるので、

「no less」= 肯定。そして「than=～と同様に」という意味にすると

以下のように考えることができます。

 

「A is no less B than C (is)  」

➡ 「A is B 、Cと同様に」

➡「AはCと同様にBである。」 

 

Relaxing is no less important than working (is).

➡ (リラックスは重要　　働くことと同様に)

➡ リラックスは働くことと同様に重要である。

 

以下のように書き換えることもできます。

• A is no more B than C (is)  = A is not any more B than C (is)
• A is no less B than C (is)    =   A is not any less than C (is)

 

まとめ

• not more than 数詞 = at most = 「多くとも～しか」
• not less than 数詞 = at least =「 少なくとも～も」
• no more than 数詞 ➡ 多くない = ネガティブ ➡　「～しか」
• no less than 数詞 ➡ 少なくない = ポジティブ ➡　「～も」
• no more A than B ➡ ネガティブ = 否定 + ～と同様に➡「Bと同様にAでない」
• no less A than B ➡ ポジティブ = 肯定 + ～と同様に➡「Bと同様にAである」
